OVERVIEW

Islas Marietas are a marine park and UNESCO site with an extraordinary story.

The Marietas islands are a small group of volcanic islands in the Banderas bay. Never inhabited, these islands were originally used as a military testing zone, and were periodically by the Mexican army with weapons and bombs.

In the late 1960s, scuba diver Jacques Cousteau led an international drive to protect the Marietas islands and ban military activity in the area. Thanks to their efforts, all human activity on the islands was banned and they are now protected by the Mexican government and UNESCO.

THE DIVE

Diving the Marietas gives you the chance to see healthy coral, beautiful reef fish and migrating pelagics.

The Marietas are known for their variety of wildlife, both above land and under the water. The islands themselves are home to many endangered bird species, such as the blue footed booby - only found elsewhere in the Galapagos and the Sea of Cortez.

As volcanic islands, the Marietas provide interesting rock formations with tunnels and swim throughs to explore. The reef is healthy and home to angel fish, puffer fish, trumpets, trunk fish and more. Always keep one eye out in the blue for schools of mobula rays or even manta!
